* Introduction on the College of Design
Cultural creative designing industry is one of the six major contemporary industries. National United University founded the College of Design on February 2014. With the Department of Architecture, Department of Industrial Design and Bachelor Program for Aborigines on Aboriginal Cultural Creative Industry, the college seeks to provide students with trans-boundary designing education and a comprehensive industry-university service platform. Its goal is to allow the students to be rooted with fundamental designing knowledge and project analysis capability, cultivate their capability on innovative designing to provide corporations with added-value values, train them with practical designing ability to link them with the industry, and nurture their concept on human-orientation, sustainable development and global perspective. To provide the students with balance and comprehensive development on all subjects, the college continues to aggressively recruit outstanding teachers and increases domestic and international exchange and cooperation opportunities to upgrade the standard of education, service and academic research. We welcome young students to join the family of designing. The goals for the establishment of this college are as the following:
After the “information industry” economy of the third wave, cultural creative industry has been seen as the “forth wave” of economic dynamism. Especially after the financial crisis, the economic influence of global Chinese were being noticed, who not only rely on economic ability, but also on their cultural creativity. The so called “values” became not only cultural features, but also the manifest of life styles. The most important trend of this century is the issue of “sustainable environment”, and the sustainable society that derives from it corresponds with the living environment. Recently, related academies researching on this issue have became trendy, which shows that researches and practical usage on the planning and designing of living environment are being paid attention to.
B. Cultural Creative Industry if the Key Emerging Industry of Taiwan:
In the past decade, economic developed nations such as the United Kingdom, the USA and Japan, to emerging Asian nations such as China, Korea, Thailand and India have invested in the development of cultural creative industry successively. The main reason to such trend is that these nations have established strategic goals on industry transformation and upgrade in correspondence to the change of global economy and social trend. Therefore, the rise of international cultural industry has close relation with the change of global economic structure. In 2009, in the “Conference Regarding Contemporary Macro-economic Situation and Corresponding Strategies”, President Ma Ying-jeou especially mentioned that cultural creative industry is one of the six contemporary key emerging industries and advocated more government investments to enlarge its scale, enhance its total production, and guide and attract civil investments into this industry. As the only national university in Miaoli, National United University has the responsibility to participate in the transformation, upgrade and manpower cultivation of the traditional manufacture industries, arts and crafts, and community and emerging cultural creative industries here. From the perspective of training future creative designing professionals of Taiwan, universities and vocational schools in Taiwan traditionally focus more on the practical education on industrial and commercial technologies. In recent years, the trend of development has altered to rising designing fields (industrial designing, architecture, consumer goods designing, visual communication and cultural creative designing). The feature of NUU is to mainly focus on training students with practical capabilities and using theoretic discussion as its supplementary means, while providing education opportunities to outstanding talented people in the industry. While the industries in Miaoli, where NUU is located, are mainly small-scale industries, agricultural industries, art and crafts and traditional manufacture industries, it is now aggressively conducting transformation into cultural creative industry, with many manufacturers creating their own brands to rid themselves from the predicament of OEM and ODM. Miaoli still has more than 200 intangible cultural heritages and precious historical buildings and relics. Given that these heritages were not upgraded and the techniques were not passed on, most of them are endangered. Therefore, they are the targets of industry development guidance, cultural inheritance, micro cultural creative manpower cultivation, regional environment landscape reformation, and developing green architecture technology.
C. The Feature of the Substance of Designing Departments:
Architecture and industrial designing are not pure engineering; they are science, humanity and art at the same time. Architecture and industrial designing emphasize the culture, innovation and comprehensiveness of the designed works and focus on the integration of accommodation and living environments. These are the features that differentiate these two departments from others, making them closely relevant on education and academic research. To implement such education ideas, the courses in these two departments are “agenda-oriented” in coordination with “designing courses” that features apprenticeship. It emphasizes the process of “doing them themselves and deep into the fields” by international field trips and practical internships that allow the students to observe, experiences and discover architecture and designing related problems. Therefore, the establishment of this college is in correspondence with social pulse and is founded on the heritage of Hakka, Minnan and aboriginal cultures. The college emphasizes “diversified regional culture”, integrates diversified cultures with innovative courses, and allows students to recognize and respect different cultures in the education process to assist local development, industrial activation, and living quality enhancement. Only through these ways can diversified and rich regional cultural works be created.
D. Enhance Resource Sharing and Promote Designing Exchange:
The active application and upgrade transformation of designing education is desperately needed in contemporary globalized world, and is the challenge educational field has to face in the rapidly changing future. Due to limited resources in infinite visions, these departments are integrated into the same college due to relevant essence through the mutual supplement of educational and research resources and mutual integration of software and hardware facilities. These means are conducive in training professional manpower with abilities to manage, R&D and cultivate living environment and space, thus maximize the usage efficiency of resources and lower the cost of education and R&D. From the perspective of industry innovation, the core designing education concepts of human-orientation and innovation not only can play crucial roles in the taste and necessity of people’s lives through the reuse of regional traditional architectures, the sustainable development of arts & craft community, application on experienced industrial products, or cultural creative goods that lead fashion trend, they can also lead National United University into a brand new criteria. On one hand, this college trains students with trans-boundary and pioneer education; on the other hand, it broadens the manpower cultivation and technological service of the industry and obtains practical education resources from the industry. This lean industry-university combined education model can create win-win opportunities for both the school and local industries, and also adheres to the policy of “combining learning with application” from the Ministry of Education.
